Orientation and Awareness Programme on implementation of NEP 2020

An orientation and awareness programme on implementation of National Education Policy, 2020 was organised by the NEP Committee, NBBGC on 23rd November 2022, Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in the college seminar hall.

Ms. Lhaki Doma Sherpa, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, served as the programme's host. Dr. D. Purohit, Principal, NBBGC gave a warm welcome before the programme started. He also gave a report on the infrastructural status, manpower, and process for the implementation of National Education Policy 2020 at the college level. Likewise, Dr. Shobha Sharma, Vice- principal and Nodal officer NEP committee, NBBGC gave a brief background of NEP 2020 and spoke about the introductory and common courses as well as the significance of regional languages that ought to be included in the curriculum and in lieu of MIL (which is included as a common course) compulsory for all students. She insisted on the fact that students should get a chance to study their mother tongue.

Ms. Lhaki Doma Sherpa introduced the resource persons to the gathering- Prof. N. Sathyanarayan, Chairperson NEP committee and Prof. Yodida Bhutia, Member Secretary, NEP committee from Sikkim University. In his presentation Prof N.Sathyanarayan highlighted some of the issues in the context of higher education. He pointed out the unique features of NEP, National skills qualifications framework alignment, and other important aspects related to NEP 2020. He also highlighted the need for teachers and other stakeholders to design curricula that incorporate local culture, customs, languages, religions, and other factors that were absent from the previous curriculum. He added that it is an excellent chance to incorporate and underline the core of the regional culture, customs and more. He also deliberated on the multiple entry and multiple exit (MEME).
In her address, Prof. Yodida Bhutia highlighted the various aspects of the 4-year UG structure, and the introduction of numerous online courses via SWAYAM for introductory courses, and common courses. The discussion was in-depth and enlightening. She further emphasized the role of universities and colleges in the process of implementation of NEP, 2020 at the State level.

Further, the session was open for discussion and interaction among the participants. Mr. Krishna Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics and Dr. Kul. B. Chettri, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics served as hosts. The participants comprised of HODs of various departments and faculties, of NBBGC, Tadong. During the question-answer session, various issues were raised related to NEP, 2020, course structure, curriculum structure, credit required for completeion of each course, and Academic Bank of Credits. All the queries were addressed by the speakers.
The programme ended with a vote of appreciation given by Dr. Nar Maya Subba, Assistant Professor, Department of Education.
