About The College

Nar Bahadur Bhandari Government College, Tadong, formerly known as Sikkim Government College, Tadong, was established in September, 1977 by an Act of State Legislature. The campus is spread over 22 acres in Tadong, 5 kms from Gangtok, the Capital of Sikkim. The College is affiliated to Sikkim University and is governed by Directorate of Higher Education, Human Resource Development Department, Govt. of Sikkim.

The college strives to cater to the growing need of quality education in Sikkim. In its endeavour to uphold its mission of emancipating our youth through value-based holistic higher education, the college offers Undergraduate (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) programmes in Arts, Commerce and Science subjects. The curriculum includes an intensive semester system and Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) along with an inter-disciplinary and interactive course structure. Presently, the college is affiliated to Sikkim University, a Central University established by an Act of Parliament of Indian in 2007.

Our constant endeavour is to promote student centric activities. The teachers take part in seminars, workshops and other faculty oriented programmes to update themselves with recent developments in research which benefit the students as well as themselves. The college provides a conducive academic environment in the form of well organized classrooms, LCD projectors, computers etc. Teaching equipments have been procured by the college with funds from UGC, DST, DONER and DBT.

Admission to the UG and PG programmes is carried out following a transparent and well administered process in compliance with the norms of both State and Central Governments. Notice for new admission is disseminated through newspapers, local news channel and online sources. The eligibility criterion is published in the prospectus and admission is strictly based on merit. Admission to PG courses is based on marks obtained in the last qualifying examination (UG) as well as through an Entrance Test conducted by the college.

The college follows a semester system which includes innovative methods of teaching/ learning/evaluation such as Term paper presentation, Project work, Fieldwork along with Guest lectures. The Central Library provides easy access to UGC-INFLIBNET for both students and faculty members. Further, each department has a departmental library which facilitates easy learning among teachers and students.

The college provides administrative and academic resources to the faculty members to submit project proposals and approach funding agencies for procuring financial assistance for the same. Research on issues of contemporary relevance and global significance is encouraged among faculty members. This has resulted in multiple UGC/ICSSR/DBT/DST funded research projects.

In 2013, an Institutional level Bio-tech Hub, funded by the Department of Bio-Technology, Government of India, was established in the college. This hub conducts workshops and training in Molecular Biology for college students as well as the teachers. Students from Sikkim University have also participated in these programmes.

The college also organizes value education talks, awareness campaigns on health and other social issues, campus cleaning drives under the tutelage of NCC, NSS, Eco Club and Students’ club “Stars of Hope”. Spiritual leaders, doctors, police personnel, advocates regularly deliver special talks on issues pertinent to the youth. These campaigns aim to raise awareness among the students about health and hygiene, selfless services along with sensitisation on social and environmental issues.

The Government of Sikkim has been striving to improve the infrastructural facilities of the colleges to facilitate quality education. The college has 31 classrooms, 15 laboratories. A computer/data centre, smart classrooms and a seminar room. Specialized labs like microbiology lab, research lab and biotech labs are also used for effective learning and research. The college has a Central Library with a seating capacity of 150 students. The campus also includes a spacious playground, volleyball court and badminton court. The multi-purpose gymnasium is on the verge of completion.

The college campus has three functional hostels and construction of an additional hostel is underway. The two boys hostels have a combined capacity of accommodating 80 students at a time, while the girls hostel can accommodate 40 students. Daily newspapers, books, television facilities and homely food are provided to the students. Access to internet is also available.

The Government of Sikkim provides free admission to all students having COI/SSC/RC. Scholarships are provided to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) and ST/SC/OBC students by the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Sikkim. Ishan Uday scholarship, a flagship programme of UGC for the North Eastern State, is also being availed by the college students.
