One Day National Seminar on Recent Developments in Physics

The Department of Physics, Sikkim Government College, recently renamed as Nar Bahadur Bhandari Degree College (NBBDC), Tadong organised a one day National Seminar on Recent Developments in Physics on 21st September, 2018 in the College Seminar hall. The event was sponsored by Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) cell of the Directorate of Higher Education, Government of Sikkim.

The main motivation of the programme was to give a platform to the faculty members and research scholars of this region to showcase their research activities and also to inculcate a culture of research activities amongst the undergraduate and postgraduate students. It is for the information of general public that the Department of Physics has been running B.Sc. (Honours) in Physics course since 1996 and M.Sc. in Physics since 2015.

The programme was inaugurated by the Honorable Vice Chancellor of the newly established “Sikkim State University”, Dr. Gopal Kumar Niroula Chettry. As the Chief Guest, Dr. Chettry spoke about the importance of conferences and seminars in the development of the subject concerned as well as that of the paper presenters.

The Principal, Dr. Bina Pradhan, who was also the Patron of the programme, encouraged the students and research scholars to benefit from such deliberations from the subject experts. The Convener, Organising Committee of the Seminar and the Head of the Department of Physics, Dr. Bhakta Kunwar, delivered the welcome speech and briefly touched upon the theme of the Seminar.

Prof. Ashok Rao of MIT delivered his plenary talk.

Thirteen papers were presented during the course of the programme. Among the presenters were Dr. Subir Mukhopadhyay and Dr. Dhruba Rai, Sikkim University and Dr. Sanat K. Das, SMIT. The topics ranged from alternative clean energy to memory devices. The programme was successfully attended by students, scholars and faculty members of various institutions.
