Formal release of NFCDA study on Drug abuse and Treatment centres in Sikkim

A programme was held on 27th June 2024 in the College Staff Room to mark the formal release of the report titled ‘Drug abuse, Addiction and Rehabilitation in Sikkim’. The study was funded by National Fund for Control of Drug Abuse (NFCDA), under Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. The event was attended by Mrs Sarika Pradhan, Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim, Dr. D. Purohit, Principal, NBBGC, and service providers from the various De-addiction, Detoxification and Rehabilitation Centres (DDRCs) in Sikkim.

Dr. Nancy C. Lhasungpa, Principal Investigator, gave a brief introduction of NFCDA, followed by key findings of the prevalence and nature of substance abuse in Sikkim. Ms. Viveka Gurung, Co-Investigator, also shed light on the nature and work of service providers in the DDRCs. The concluding comments were given by Dr. Lhasungpa who highlighted the way forward to tackle the challenge of drug abuse in Sikkim. Secretary Madam also apprised the gathering regarding the various initiatives of the state government. She expressed her desire to conduct more in-depth studies on the topic of substance abuse which is a major problem in Sikkim. Representatives from among the service providers also shared their viewpoints and feedback. The programme concluded with lunch.
